Abstract
:
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the failure of kidney to maintain adequate excretory, regulatory and endocrine functions. The most characteristic laboratory findings are increased concentration of nitrogenous compounds in plasma. Retention of these compounds are eventually fatal if not treated by dialysis. The study included 143 patients with ESRD undergoing regular dialysis with age ranged from 20 to 70 years and another 50 normal subjects served as control with age ranged from 17 to 50. Nitrogenous compounds (urea, creatinine, and uric acid), enzymes (AST, ALT and LDH), minerals ( sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphoms) and parathyroid hormones were measured before and after dialysis in each patient. The influence of age and sex in patients and control. groups were studied. The obtained data were statically analyzed and a comparison was made between patients and controls and between males and females before and after dialysis. Parametric and nonparametric statistical methods were used. In addition simple linear regression and correlation analysis to establish the relationship between variables were computed. Our results showed significant difference between patients and controls in all variables. A remarkable difference were obtained when these variables measured in ESRD patients before and after dialysis (P
