The Faculty of Science was established in the academic year 1393/1394 H (1973/1974G), in jeddah,including the following departments : mathematics,physics,chemistry,geology
and biological .

Following that a department for sea science was established beside the metrology department and astronomy section of the physics department in 1398/1399 H. Later the sea science section became an independent institute under management and supervision of the faculty. In 1400/1401 H it was converted to a faculty under the name of sea science faculty. Also the metrology department became an independent high institute in the same year under the name of “Metrology and Dry Area Studies Faculty” which was changed later to “Metrology, Environment & Dry Area Cultivation Faculty”. The geology section was joined to the applied geology Institute which was under supervision of the university in collaboration with the ministry of petroleum & mineral resources and both of these were considered to constitute the earth science faculty.

At beginning of academic year 1399/1400 the astrology section was separated from physic department to become an independent astrology science department. In order to cope with scientific and technological development and to prepare qualified human resources, the statistics and computer science under the mathematics department and biochemistry section were established. In 1404/1405 H the biochemistry section was separated from the chemistry department and became an independent department and also in the academic year 1405/1406 H the computer science section was separated from the mathematics department and became an independent department, this faculty under the name of “Computing and Information Technology” faculty. The faculty of science is become have seven departments :
