Abstract : The status of oral health in relation to low bone density or osteoporosis in the Saudi population is not known. The detection of men and women with low bone mineral density or osteoporosis is an important strategy to decrease the incidence of osteoporosis. Recent studies suggested that incidental findings on dental panoramic radiographs may be used as a tool to detect men and women with low bone mineral density or osteoporosis. The main objectives of the present research project are to evaluate the oral health status in Saudi population with low BMD or osteoporosis and to assess the value of dental panoramic radiography in identifying Saudi men and women with low BMD or osteoporosis and to study the relationship between biochemical bone turnover markers and dental panoramic radiography in Saudi men and women with low BMD or osteoporosis. The duration of the project is 20 months performed by multi-disciplinary team. The findings of this project will provide important information on oral health status in relation to low BMD or osteoporosis in Saudi population.
